The 1854-D Liberty Gold Dollar (Buy on eBay) has the lowest mintage of the series with only 2,935 coins struck at the Dahlonega Mint. The issue is considered rare in any grade and represents a major rarity in choice uncirculated condition or higher.
Most pieces encountered in the marketplace exhibit various problems, including weak strikes, dipped or cleaned surfaces, and less than stellar eye appeal. Often with this issue, the obverse will be considerably more sharply struck than the reverse. The highest graded certified example an NGC MS 64. This coin sold for $64,625 at auction in 2013.
